California Adds Sweeping Mandates for Certain Plastics

California’s SB 54 legislation shifts the onus from the consumer to the plastics industry, raising $5 billion from the industry over ten years to aid the efforts to cut plastic waste, especially in but not limited to our oceans. The legislation requires that all plastic packaging in California be reduced to the following stages:

  • Reduction at a minimum of 30 percent on and after January 1, 2028, and afterward, the following levels:

  • 40 percent on and after January 1, 2030.

  • 65 percent on and after January 1, 2032.
